If there’s one thing that a significant number of people can rally around it’s beer. So here at Moon Hill Brewing we thought, “Hey, if we can find a way to do something good with beer, we’ll bet we can get a lot of people to support it.”

That led us earlier this year to get involved with the Black Ale Project – a nation-wide initiative to raise money and awareness for America’s war veterans through the sale of craft beer. The idea was the brain child of Dave Pappas, a former active duty Marine and non-combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Dave’s idea was to enlist the help of craft breweries across the country that would each brew a special beer for the project in honor of vets, donating some of the proceeds to a veteran’s organization of their choice. The Black Ale Project does not handle any of the donations itself; instead, all monies are donated directly by each brewery to the vet organization they chose.

The philosophy behind the concept is as simple as it is brilliant. In Dave Pappas’s own words: “buy a beer, help a veteran.”

Loving the idea of using beer for good, not evil, we jumped into the project with both feet, coming up with a unique Chocolate Orange Imperial Stout we named “Got Your Six” that we released back in February. Offering it on tap in our pub at the Gardner Ale House, Got Your Six quickly sold out, raising over $1000 for the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center (MVOC), a non-profit organization serving the needs of veterans in the greater Gardner area for over 35 years.

So that got us to thinking, “Boy, this whole ‘help-veterans-by-selling-beer thing’ is a great idea. Let’s do it again!” Then it quickly occurred to us to not try to fix something that ain’t broke, so we’re making another batch of Got Your Six. Because it’s such a special (and delicious!) stout, we’re going to celebrate with a special release party Saturday, January 12 at the Gardner Ale House, 74 Parker Street. If you had some earlier this year, get on back to the Ale House to have some more. If you missed it the first time, you better get there early so you don’t miss it again. It’s sure to sell out as quickly as the first batch did. Forgive us for saying that it’s life changing, that’s how good it is. But don’t take our word for it. Come try it for yourself.

Come to think of it, it actually could be life-changing. Since we’ll be donating more money from the sale of Got Your Six once again to the MVOC, your purchase of a pint or two will help area veterans – perhaps making a positive and significant change in their lives.
